Prior to October 1, 2000, transplant of Intestine was coded to 46.99, Other operations on intestine. Code 46.97, Transplant of intestine has been created to uniquely identify this procedure. Potential candidates for intestinal transplantation are patients with poor intestinal function who cannot be maintained on intravenous feedings. Short bowel syndrome is the most common cause of intestinal failure. In other cases, the entire intestine may be present, but is not able to absorb sufficient fluids or nutrients.
