Transurethral balloon dilation of the prostatic urethra, also referred to as balloon dilation of the prostate is a relatively new procedure that is being done with increasing frequency for symptomatic benign prostatic hypertrophy. The purpose of the procedure is to reduce the narrowing of the prostatic urethra by dilating the urethra. The procedure may be performed under either topical or general anesthesia.
