A new category V29, Observation and evaluation of newborns and infants for suspected conditions not found, has been provided to identify those instances where further evaluation or care is given to a newborn because of a potential problem without diagnosis. The newborn period is considered to be the first 28 days of life. Category V29 may be used as the principal diagnosis code for newborns transferred to another facility, where the use of a code from V30-V39, Newborn, is no longer appropriate as the principal diagnosis.
