The "Clarification of Vascular Access Devices vs. Central Venous Catheter" article published in Coding Clinic, First Quarter 1996, pp. 3-4, inadvertently included Perm-a-cath as an example of the totally implantable vascular access device (TIVAD). Perm-a-cath is not a TIVAD. Placement may be performed via the subclavian or jugular vein (the femoral artery may even be used). The catheter is tunneled through and cuffed (to the skin). An external portion of the catheter may be seen at the insertion site. The correct code for Perm-a-cath is 38.93, Puncture of vessel, venous catheterization, NEC. ...
