Abdominal Paracentesis (49082, 49083)/Peritoneal Lavage (49084)
Abdominal paracentesis is a procedure in which a needle or catheter is inserted into the peritoneal cavity to obtain ascitic fluid for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. To more accurately reflect the work required to properly perform this procedure, codes 49080 and 49081 were deleted, and codes 49082 and 49083 were established in 2012 to describe abdominal paracentesis performed without or with imaging guidance.
