Question
Is CPT code 69631, Tympanoplasty without mastoidectomy (including canalplasty, atticotomy and/or middle ear surgery), initial or revi-sion; without ossicular chain reconstruction, a unilateral or bilateral procedure?
AMA Comment
CPT code 69631 is a unilateral procedure. Therefore, if the physician performs the procedure as described by code 69631 in both ears, then it would be appropriate to append the modifier -50 to code 69631 to indicate that code 69631 was performed as a bilateral procedure.
