Over the past several years, numerous inquiries have been received regarding the appropriate Current Procedural Terminology (CPT ®) codes to report for blood cell exchange procedures. Although the code descriptors have not changed over time, there has been confusion between manual and automated blood cell exchange procedures. In 2021, the CPT Editorial Panel approved new instructional parenthetical notes to clearly differentiate between these blood cell exchange procedures. This coding brief clarifies these changes.
