Coding Update: Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR)
The 2013 TAVR/TAVI [transcatheter aortic valve implantation] codes (33361-33365) did not include TAVR/TAVI when performed using the open transapical thoracic approach because at that time, the device was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use via that approach. Thus, TAVR/TAVI performed via the open transapical approach remained a Category III code (0318T) for 2013.
