Question
If an initial inguinal hernia repair
is performed, how is the postconception
age defined?
AMA Comment
Postconception age equals
the gestational age of an infant in weeks at the
time of the hernia repair. Initial inguinal hernia
repairs performed on preterm infants who are
older than 50 weeks postconception age and
younger than the age of 6 months at the time
of surgery should be reported with codes 49495
and 49496.
