Coding Communication:Electronic Analysis of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs) Using Data Remotely Obtained
Advances in technology now enable physicians to monitor patients
with implanted cardiac devices (implantable cardioverter-defibrillators [ICDs]
and cardiac pacemakers) by interrogating these devices remotely using a manufacturer's
specific monitor-transmitter. The remote monitor- transmitter sends the data to
a distant receiving station or secure server, allowing the physician to retrieve
the data for review and analysis. Recently, the AMA CPT Editorial Panel decided
that this service should be reported using current codes 93741 or
93743, as appropriate. The codes are as follows:
