Question: A physician evaluates a normal newborn after an
uneventful delivery and reports code 99431, History and
examination of the normal newborn infant, initiation of
diagnostic and treatment programs and preparation of hospital
records. (This code is to be used for birthing room
deliveries.), for this service. Later in the day, the infant develops
respiratory distress and is transferred to an intensive setting
for observation, frequent interventions, continual cardiorespiratory
monitoring, and other intensive care services. The physician
sees the child again and initiates intensive care services.
