Coding Communication:Home Apnea Monitoring
Apnea is a major contributor to sudden and unwitnessed
death (sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS) in
neonates in the first month of life and through early
infancy. In certain high-risk populations (eg, premature
infants; infants with anomalies of the face, jaw, and airway;
neurologically impaired infants; infants exposed to
maternal narcotics; and infants with chronic lung disease),
early identification of apnea and timely intervention may
be life saving.
Once significant episodes of apnea are identified,
hospital observation and an investigation of serious
underlying pathology is commonly followed by in-home
