CPT Knowledgebase - Nov 5, 2024

Cryoneurolysis applies freezing cold to produce nerve destruction via Wallerian degeneration, which may be reversible. CPT 64624 and 64640 describe "destruction by neurolytic agent;" 0440T-0442T describe "cryoablation." CPT Assistant (April 2019) stated that cryoneurolysis may be reported with 64640 (64624 was effective in 2020). Would 64640 (or 64624, depending on the nerves treated) be appropriate to report reversible nerve destruction via cryoneurolysis?
