Historically, code 76811 has been reported for a single, detailed fetal anatomical examination performed during the second trimester of pregnancy. However, as medical practice has advanced and ultrasound equipment resolution has improved, the ability to detect fetal and placental anomalies at an earlier stage of pregnancy has become relevant and timely. Many physicians with specialized training are performing this examination during the first trimester of pregnancy when there is a known risk factor, a known or suspected anomaly, or a previous abnormal ultrasound. Would code 76811 be reported when the service is performed in the first trimester of pregnancy?
