Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and irreversible neurologic disorder that affects areas of the brain involved in thought, memory, and learning. Though the words Alzheimer's and dementia are often used interchangeably, dementia covers a group of brain disorders that cause problems with thinking, memory, and behavior.
