Myotomes are muscle groups that are primarily controlled by a single spinal nerve. Clinicians use isometric tests that check for muscle weakness, pain or other difficulty performing movements to pinpoint damage to a nerve. For example, damage or impingement of the nerve at the L5 or S1 level may be indicated if a patient experiences radicular pain along the leg when a clinician raises the patient’s leg straight up.
