COVID-19 coding: Encounters at the ‘drive-in’ are reported as face-to-face visits
Question: We have patients who can’t take part in the audio/visual telehealth visit which is allowed under the COVID-19 rules.
We understand we can report telephone-only visits but the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) requires a real-time, two-way, audio/visual encounter when the doctor or treating practitioner writes a prescription for a controlled substance.
Rather than leave those patients stranded our solution is to a provide a drive-in service when they need a refill. The patients come to the practice’s parking lot, we give them a tablet and the doctor — who stays in the office — performs the visit.
Now we need to know how to report these visits. Can you point us to an official source that states whether we should we report this as a telehealth visit or a regular office visit?
