Diagnosis coding corner: Neurogenic claudication — different diagnoses may determine your revenue

Check your local coverage determination for epidural injections if you noticed an uptick in diagnosis-related denials after Sept. 30 last year. Many carriers will not cover epidurals when the injection is reported with a diagnosis of lumbar spinal stenosis without neurogenic claudication, advises David Waldman, COC, CPC, The Headache & Pain Center, P.A., Overland Park, Kan.
