Look to package information to correctly bill for rapid strep test
Question: I have a physician who is looking for the correct code for a rapid strep test done in the office. I had given them 87880 (Infectious agent antigen detection by immunoassay with direct optical observation; Streptococcus, group A), but one of the physicians saw code 87430 (Infectious agent antigen detection by enzyme immunoassay technique, qualitative or semiquantitative, multiple-step method; Streptococcus, group A) and wants to know why this code wasn’t used. I believe it is a blood test but don’t know for sure. If they send the patient to the hospital for the test, what would the code be?
