Q&A: Here’s how to code an IT band lengthening procedure

Question: We have a surgeon who has started to perform open Z-plasty procedures for iliotibial band lengthening at the knee. What would be the appropriate code for this? We are looking at codes 27305 (Fasciotomy, iliotibial [tenotomy], open) or 27025 (Fasciotomy, hip or thigh, any type) with modifier 22 (Increased procedural service).
