Modifiers: Know When to Separate E/M From Surgery RVUs
Billable E/M service might be obvious, but never assume it. If an emergency department (ED) provider performs a significant, separately identifiable evaluation and management (E/M) service in addition to a surgical procedure, appending a modifier is crucial to show the separation of the codeable E/M service from the E/M built into the relative value units (RVUs) of the surgery.
