Internal hem-orrhoids are those that occur proximal to the dentate line. External hemorrhoids occur distal to the dentate line. The dentate line is the interface between mucosa lined intestine and squamous cell anal tissue. Internal hemorrhoids that protrude through the anus are prolapsed internal hemorrhoids, not internal and external.
