Focus on laterality for appropriate coding The greater occipital nerve block is a commonly used procedure in the treatment of headache and migraine. If the physician performs an occipital nerve block by specifically injecting on one particular side, the laterality plays an important role in how you report the service. For example, if the physician administers a greater occipital nerve (GON) block on the left side, you should submit code 64405 (Injection, anesthetic agent; greater occipital nerve) and append modifier LT (Left side).
