In the past, for a simple diagnosis of "stroke," the ICD-9 Index listed 436 (Acute, but ill-defined, cerebrovascular disease) as the appropriate code, according to Jackie Miller, senior consultant at Dallas, GA-based Coding Strategies Inc.
