description | High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) uses thin-section axial tomography and a computer-image reconstruction algorithm, that produces less smoothing at interfaces, thus providing better delineation of small structures and detail. HRCT differs from the conventional CT in that it uses a very narrow x-ray beam collimation (1-1.3mm slice thickness compared to conventional 8-10mm) and a so-called 'high spatial frequency reconstruction algorithm'. HRCT is used to accurately assess the lung parenchyma and airways for inflammation and scarring in the diagnosis of various health problems, for example, the diagnosis and assessment of interstitial lung disease. HRCT does not image the whole lungs, therefore is unsuitable for the assessment of lung cancer or other localized lung diseases.

change reason | Changed from the contextually relative term "high resolution" to specifying the focus of this imaging exam. Recommended at RadLex / LOINC meeting 2014 03 14. Changed component from Multisection lung parenchyma, and system from lung parenchyma, for conformance with LOINC/RadLex unified model.
