description | N gonorrhoea is a nonmotile gram-negative diplococcus identified as the cause of a sexually-transmitted infection(STI). Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported notifiable disease in the United States. The highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers, young adults, and African Americans. Gonorrhoea is a common cause of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID), infertility, and ectopic pregnancy in women. Infection with gonorrhoea also increases the risk for the acquisition and transmission of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV). Single, high titer antibody levels may indicate past or current infection. A fourfold increase in titer between acute and convalescent specimens is considered indicative of current or recent infection.
