description | Glycophosphatidylinositol(GPI)-linked membrane proteins CD55 (DAF-Decay Acclerating Factor) and CD59 (Membrane Inhibitor of Reactive Lysis-MIRL) are normally present on red blood cells to protect the cells from destruction by complement in the immune system. The expression of CD55 and CD59 is deficient in a subpopulation of patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria(PNH). PNH is a disorder is which the stem cells lack proteins tht prevent them from being destroyed by the body, resulting in intermittant destruction of cells, usually at night. PNH is characterized by chronic intravascular hemolysis, bone marrow failure and life threatening thrombosis. Information from ARUP Laboratories and www.pnhfoundation.org, accessed 2008 01 18. | ||
