description | Female participants are asked whether they have had a tubal ligation and whether they are able to have children. They are also asked about whether their male partners can have children. Female participants are then asked about the type of birth control they have used in the past and the type they are currently using. Questions A.1-33 are asked of females. The NSFG provides a card of response categories to the respondent. The card instructions read, "Card 30 lists methods that some people use to prevent pregnancy or to prevent sexually transmitted disease. As I read each one, please tell me if you have ever used it for any reason. Just give me a "yes" or "no" answer. Please answer yes even if you have only used the method once." Response categories for question 33 were modified by the PhenX Working Group to include vasectomy. The following should be noted for questions A.1-3: Many women are sterilized with clips instead of having their tubes surgically tied. In this instance, the respondent would answer "no" to sterilization when they are, in fact, sterilized. This is because the clips can be removed. The PhenX Working Group recommends editing the question to include "or clips placed on your tubes." | ||
