description | A questionnaire to assess major depressive disorder (MDD), a mood disorder characterized by one or more major depressive episodes without manic, mixed or hypomanic episodes (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). This measure is used to screen an individual for the presence of depression and to assess the severity of underlying symptoms. Depression is a common disorder with the lifetime risk between 10-25% for women and 5-12% for men. Depression demonstrates a familial pattern and is co-morbid with other psychiatric disorders including anxiety disorder, substance use disorders, and eating disorders. Additionally, certain medical conditions such as diabetes, stroke and heart disease increase the risk of depression (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). Some individuals who present with major depressive episodes may have a bipolar spectrum disorder. | ||
