name | Fructose challenge (hydrogen breath test) panel - Exhaled gas
description | The hydrogen breath test is based on the fact that the only hydrogen gas source in humans is intestinal bacteria, which produces hydrogen gas during carbohydrate metabolism. After the patient ingests a dose of fructose, any carbohydrate that is not absorbed is metabolized by intestinal bacteria During this process, hydrogen gas is produced, which is absorbed and eventually exhaled through the lungs; the amount of hydrogen in the expired gas is measured at various intervals depending on the protocol being used. The test is used to detect fructose malabsorption, irritable bowel syndrome and small intestine bacterial overgrowth.[PMID: 16474100]

time | Pt = Point in time: To identify measures at a point in time. This is a synonym for “spot” or “random” as applied to urine measurements.
system | Exhl gas = Exhaled gas (breath)
scale | Qn = Quantitative: The result of the test is a numeric value that relates to a continuous numeric scale. Reported either as an integer, a ratio, a real number, or a range.
