description | Anal-rectal cytology (ARC) is commonly used as a screening and diagnostic tool to evaluate human papillomavirus related disease of the anal canal, especially in at-risk populations. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the anus has become a serious health issue in the gay community. The etiology and pathogenesis of anal squamous neoplasia are analogous to those of squamous neoplasia of the uterine cervix. Anal intraepithelial lesions (ASIL) arise in the transition zone of the anus. ARC is interpreted and reported using the Bethesda 2001 guidelines, modified for this site. | ||
