description | Datura stramonium is an herbaceous annual plant that contains tropane alkaloids such as atropine and scopolamine. Leaves and seeds of D. stramonium appear to be rich in atropine contrary to D. inoxia which has a higher dosage of scopolamine than atropine. Exposures to Datura appear to be minor most of the time leading to a complete recovery, however there have been fatal cases. In the most serious cases, depression of central nervous system with convulsive coma and risk of apnea have been observed. Hair analysis for Datura spp. intoxication can be performed when neither blood nor urine specimens have been collected. LC-MS/MS appears to be the most efficient method when searching for very low concentrations of tropane alkaloids. [PMID: 23084788] | ||
