description | This test is part of one growth hormone deficiency testing procedure, in which glucose and growth hormone levels are measured at specific time intervals after the administration of arginine and insulin. Normally, arginine and insulin-induced hypoglycemia stimulate the release of growth hormone, so patients without growth hormone deficiency will have a significant increase in serum growth hormone in response to arginine and insulin administration. In patients with growth hormone deficiency, however, the increase in and the absolute peak of the growth hormone level will be much lower than expected. Glucose levels are monitored during this procedure because a certain level of hypoglycemia has to be achieved in order to stimulate growth hormone release, and periodic glucose measurements can be used to titrate the insulin dose as needed. | ||
