nameResidual tumor classification [Type] in Cancer specimen
descriptionThe residual tumor, or R, classification indicates the absence (R0) or presence (R1-R2) of residual tumor after treatment (e.g. surgical treatment alone, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or multimodal therapy). It is used as an adjunct classification to the TNM system developed and maintained by the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC). The R classification reflects the effectiveness of the primary treatment, is used when designing clinical management after treatment, and is a strong indicator of prognosis if applied in a consistent manner.[PMID: 12015777] This term was created for, but not limited in use to, the Colorectal Cancer Structured Reporting Protocol (2nd Edition, 2012) developed by the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (RCPA).
