namePulmonary Embolism Severity Index panel [PESI]
descriptionThe pulmonary embolism severity index (PESI) is a clinical decision support tool for predicting the 30-day outcome of patients with pulmonary embolism (PE). It contains 11 prognostic variables, including age, gender, heart rate, pulse oximetry result, and past medical history, that are used to stratify patients into five risk classes (I-V) that are associated with increasing probability of mortality. Patients in risk classes I and II are considered to be at low risk for mortality and other adverse medical outcomes and are potential candidates for outpatient care or early discharge. Patients in risk classes III-V are at higher risk of adverse outcomes, and more intense treatment and monitoring may be indicated.[PMID: 16020800][PMID: 18989542]
