descriptionThe Emoji modifier skin tones for human emojis were released in Unicode Version 8.0 (2015). These characters are based on the six tones (I-VI) of the Fitzpatrick skin type classification scale [LOINC: 66555-4], a recognized standard in dermatology used to estimate the response of different types of skin to ultraviolet (UV) light.[PMID: 3377516] In the Emoji modifiers, Fitzpatrick skin types I & II are merged (Emoji Modifier Fitzpatrick Type-1-2, Light skin tone). Types III-VI are each represented individually as medium-light skin tone (Emoji Modifier Fitzpatrick Type-3), medium skin tone (Emoji Modifier Fitzpatrick Type-4), medium-dark skin tone (Emoji Modifier Fitzpatrick Type-5), and dark skin tone (Emoji Modifier Fitzpatrick Type-6).
