name | Pancreatic polypeptide sham feeding panel - Serum or Plasma
description | Pancreatic polypeptide (PP) is normally secreted by the pancreas in response to hypoglycemia, ingestion of food or chewing. Sham feeding, where food is chewed but not swallowed, results in PP secretion due to vagal nerve stimulation, with a normal response to sham feeding consisting of a rapid rise followed by a return to baseline PP levels. A lack of response to sham feeding can be caused by vagal nerve damage, autonomic disorders, or extensive pancreatic destruction (by pancreatitis or cancer). [PMID:12146997]
